I a molecular microbiologist interested in bacterial diseases and their prevention by vaccination. my two main research interests are meningococcal meningitis, a particularly feared infection throughout the world, and campylobacter jejuni food poisoning, one of the major food-borne infections affecting people in the uk. i developed an interest in science from a very early age, and by the age of 11 was intent on a career in research. i read microbiology at the university of reading, gaining my honours degree in 1983. during my time at reading, i became very interested in infectious disease and its prevention. this was shortly after the eradication of smallpox by vaccination and the then professor of microbiology, colin kaplin, at reading had been involved in this eradication campaign. i then went on to the biochemistry department at cambridge to study for my doctorate using molecular techniques to study the bacterium escherichia coli. this was a particularly exciting time to be working in cambridge, as the new techniques of molecular biology were just then being more broadly applied to general problems in biology. following a medical research council training fellowship in the same laboratory, i worked for 9 years at the national institute for biological standards and control in hertfordshire. my particular interest here was in applying molecular techniques to practical matters, particularly vaccination. in 1996 i had a sabbatical in germany. it was during this year that i was fortunate enough to meet my wife, dorothee, who was then studying medicine in berlin. we returned to england in 1997 and shortly afterwards moved to oxford where we have lived ever since. we have two daughters, felicity 6 ; and victoria 2 ; . since coming to oxford as a wellcome trust senior fellow, i have been involved in a number of programmes around infectious disease including the development of the peter medawar building for pathogen research, a multi-disciplinary research centre combining groups drawn from three university science divisions. in october 2004, i was appointed professor of molecular epidemiology at oxford and hoary professor of biology at the university of cardiff. professor martin maiden replaces professor karen day, former tutor in biology, who left last year to take up a post in the department of medical and molecular parasitology at the new york university medical school. she has since been elected to an emeritus fellowship.
