Alliance target report the target members also visited carhenge and met with a representative from the attraction's supporting group, friends of carhenge. carhenge is one of nebraska's most whimsical and quirky attractions. it is also one of the state's most popular and most famous. unfortunately, since highway 385 was relocated a few miles west, travelers are not passing by carhenge as frequently as before. this relocation has significantly reduced the number of spur-of-the-moment visitors who stopped at carhenge as they drove past it. the alliance chamber of commerce and the box butte county visitors committee need to continue their efforts with the friends of carhenge to help deal with some of the issues facing this attraction. while in hemingford, the target members visited the box butte county reservoir. this 1, 600 acre lake north of hemingford is an excellent place to capitalize on the region's boating and fishing opportunities. other outdoor recreation activities such as swimming, primitive camping, water skiing, and wind surfing are opportunities hemingford can capitalize on. the local historical society also is interested in converting a former schoolhouse into a local history museum and visitor information center. currently, some museum artifacts are exhibited in the back room of the sweet sage downtown, but residents would like to have them relocated to a new home by next year. the residents of hemingford should be commended for their efforts. a local museum is an excellent idea to not only attract visitors to the community, but also to preserve its heritage and past. downtown alliance is worth visiting and definitely worth marketing and promoting. alliance is a main street community, and many great projects are in the future for downtown. from its cobblestone streets to its historical and architecturally appealing buildings, downtown alliance is an attraction in itself. the staff of the alliance main street have helped to make the downtown streets inviting, warm, and friendly to both local residents and out-of-town visitors. now that a sales tax initiative for economic development projects has been passed by voters, the local main street program can begin working on other projects planned for downtown beautification and development. one project includes the purchase of new lamp posts and benches to decorate downtown and also to conceal electricity and telephone poles within downtown. downtown alliance is certainly a jewel for the county. with over 95% of the downtown office and retail space occupied, downtown and tourism leaders are succeeding in ensuring its vitality. two new restaurants have recently opened downtown, and alliance main street is currently working on placing silhouettes in the windows of downtown buildings' top floors. these silhouettes will highlight alliance's history while also providing a lived-in look for the buildings. a self-guided walking tour of downtown buildings is available, so visitors can learn more about and gain a better appreciation of their history and architecture. this tour not only keeps the history of downtown alliance alive, it also provides residents with an even greater reason to be proud of their community. the target members were impressed with the hospitality training brochure developed and poker chips.
