December, 2007 christmas campout december 6-9, 2007 by carl nelson ten rigs met at the banning stagecoach koa in banning, ca on thursday despite the ominous weather forecasts of large winter storms for the weekend. the brunt of the first storm did not hit until later in the evening, but as forecast we were in for a very stormy weekend. however, in spite of the weather, everyone was in the christmas spirit and the party went off as planned. the group took a short drive to the beautiful sun lakes country club for thursday's dinner. the club is located in the sun lakes retirement community where tryna and al morton live. the community has some 3400 homes with many facilities which of course were all well decorated for the holidays. it was indeed a magnificent sight! after a delightful meal in the clubhouse dining room, we returned to the campground for an evening of palm poker and spinner. after a very rainy night, tryna morton prepared a delicious egg casserole and with the help of connie just, mary peterson, lorraine brockway and others served up a very hearty breakfast. transporting the hot food from the motorhomes to the club house was not an easy feat with the rain still coming down. the meal was furnished to the club courtesy of orin & clare gilbertson. after breakfast some of the gamblers ventured to nearby morongo casino to try their luck while others searched for antique treasures in banning. in the afternoon a hot game of poker took place in the clubhouse. an italian dinner was catered in the evening courtesy of the club. later, white elephant gifts were awarded in an altered game of card bingo, where opened gifts could be taken from previous winners who would then have to open another gift etc. some gifts were more desirable and were traded as often as allowed. saturday's main course for breakfast was. I find myself in a room filled with writers. a middle-aged man with a comb-over is speaking onstage but no one is listening. tracey had mentioned this reading to me, she thought i might enjoy it. i came because i thought she would be here but no such luck. there are locally produced poetry books on a table by the door, a young girl desperately eager to make some sales. i move to the bar, pushing through the crush of bodies. waving a ten dollar bill, i lean over the back of a beautiful woman who sits sipping at the bar. two blue dress straps drape over her bare pink shoulders like the st. louis memorial arches. i very conscious of the trace of intent my breath leaves on her neck but she doesn't turn around. then i notice it on her shoulder blade. like in the pamphlet the dermatologist gave me. what to watch out for. the bartender takes my order and the woman looks over her shoulder at me. i picture her face ravaged by disease. "you should really have that looked at, " i say, touching the offending mark on her shoulder. she almost jumps off her stool. "don't touch me." she moves through the crowd to be closer to the poet onstage, who is trying to tell a joke. on my way out i make a pity purchase. the young girl at the door is ecstatic to make a sale. "isn't he brilliant?" she says smiling earnestly and poker chair.
