Brain tumor society 800.770.tbts 8287 ; my husband and i joined this group about four years ago, shortly after his brain surgery. often on this remarkable journey, we tell only part of the "real" story to others. we may be shocked by their lack of knowledge about the sweeping changes, at times invisible, wrought by this illness. at meetings, michele lucas urges us to tell it like it is. she models a caring way of active listening. we have only a few rules: we don't interrupt; we don't carry on separate conversations; we do respect privacy. each night is unique. some attendees bring a spouse, sibling, parent or friend. we have learned to trust that allows each of us to speak. the support group meetings are intense and life-affirming. we listen to and sometimes cry about our losses, our frustrations with members of the medical community or the ravages of the illness itself. sometimes we celebrate a triumphant moment. through it all, we seek each other out to bear witness to our pain and rejoice in our victories, and we make brave new friends on this strange journey. i have watched my husband soldier on. he wants to give hope to others struck by this disease. in our struggle to shape a new life, we have grown incredibly close to each other, and to our children, family and friends. the support group has been critical to our ability to face the uncertain future with confidence and hope. we are not alone. cynthia o'grady, m.ed i first went to the support group out of a feeling of desperation. i needed to find people who shared my fears, suffered my pain, and could still give me hope for the future. i felt a strong camaraderie among others sharing the rigors of this disease. i felt supported, cared about and understood! it was the first time since my diagnosis that i didn't feel alone with my losses. at first i thought meetings might be all "gloom and doom, " but i quickly discovered how much laughter and joy came from that safe haven. it often provided comic relief during my most stressful periods - from people who had been down that road before me. we celebrated each other's accomplishments and readily gave collective strength when it was needed.

682. the current co-ordination, whilst not deficient could be more effective and would benefit from a more formal organisation. nationally, increased co-ordination between the fiu and the financial regulator would certainly ensure that there is a direct communication between the operational and the policy aspects of ireland's aml cft efforts. proactive cooperation between the fiu and the revenue commissioners in ensuring the str systems is run effectively and co-ordinated feedback can be provided to reporting entities. this could help ensure effective co-operation on issues with the financial and dnfbp sectors that have been recognised as vulnerable to emerging ml trends providing information that can be utilised as ireland seeks to review its aml cft systems when implementing the 3rd eu ml directive. 683. better strategic analysis derived from the increasing number of strs submitted by the financial institutions and dnfbps will require more analytical resources to be dedicated within the fiu. a greater prominence within the garda and the mlsc to the work of the fiu would ensure that, as a law enforcement fiu-style, the irish fiu can perform the dual tasks for information analysis and investigation of ml and tf cases to ensure that operational information can be strategically analysed and used to inform policy decisions. 684. the cab effectively demonstrates how a well resourced multi-agency organisation is able to have an impact. this model should be considered for application in other areas of ireland's aml cft system. 685. at an international level ireland should continue to seek arrangements that assist international cooperation. given the large amount of financial business that ireland's financial institutions generate from abroad it is important that ireland has open gateways to make and respond to international inquiries. 686. ireland should proactively review the effectiveness of its aml cft system on a regular basis. this will help ensure that the system is kept up to date and effective. 6.1.3 compliance with recommendation 31 rating r.31 lc summary of factors underlying rating a lack of formal aml cft framework outside the issuance of guidance notes limits the targeting of the resources that ireland has directed at aml cft systems. there is room for more formal increased interagency co-operation particularly between the mliu and the financial regulator. there is no regular and or proactive review of aml cft systems.
The context and drama of their creation. they are poignant and unadorned, their spareness allowing the listener to imagine the instrumentation and full production that might have accompanied them had johnston had the means or ability to complete his vision. though he can't exactly sing and his guitar skills are rudimentary at best, he has a talent for piano and is a gifted and poetic lyricist, with an ear for melody and phrasing. his songs are powerful and his performances in the film are heartrending and raw. much of his music is a lo-fi melding of blues and folk turned inside out. he was a quirky, geeky, whiteboy deconstructionist before beck even hit puberty. he has a knack for cleverly turned phrases and honest, soul-baring simplicity. the film effectively demonstrates that the power of johnston's art is in its immediacy. every drawing and every song is a sort of exorcism, a method by which he continually divests himself of the tumult in his mind and heart. the creations themselves are not so important to him; he churns them out at an astonishing rate. he does not dwell on them; they are too many in number. once the exorcism is complete, he is on to the next one. this is his most effective therapy. it is as each day brings new demons that must be put down before dusk. "do yourself a favor, " he sings, "become your own savior and don't let the sun go down on your grievances." the devil and daniel johnston is both inspiring and heartbreaking, a stylish yet simple and effective portrait of an extraordinary artist. the film leaves us with an image of daniel and his parents in front of their current home in waller, texas. his parents are elderly and will not be able to support their son much longer. though this seems to be a somewhat peaceful period in his life, it is clear that another lifealtering change is just around the corner. one gets the feeling that the trials and tribulations of daniel johnston are hardly in the past. his most difficult years may still lay ahead.

Years and all the great times had by all. now i can only see the next 25 years ahead for more good times and those rides i haven't been on yet. this is just the start once again as i look at the to-do list for inspiration and the two more rides i want to do next year and the year after. i hope you have a list as well for yourself, it's a great way to pass each winter and to fulfill your dreams on the road. motorcycling is about more than just owning one, it's about using it. most of you may not have the time as i do, but there are many ideas for getting across the country. one year i rode coast-to-coast taking some extra time along the way. then a buddy flew out and met up with me for the weekend. then he rode back while i flew home. we both had a great trip and summer. i've shipped my bike ahead to a rally and flown in and rode home and vice-versa. most of the time it's all about time--something most of us are short of if we get only a few weeks of holidays each year. that's why being creative once in a while can open up those long distance rides you've always wanted to do. i enjoy traveling and i'm a hard guy to keep up with when it comes to distance. even if it means packing up everything in a trailer and driving for a few days non-stop to get somewhere, i'll do it. but i'll enjoy it more when i get there and have my bike with me and get more out of the event than not being there or without a motorcycle. time my friend is a funny thing. we all say we don't have the time to do something or another but when we take the time to do it we're all glad we did. so this year take some time for yourself and i'll see you on the road over the next few years.

One of the nation's top litigators on two important federal laws reviewed their possible impact on builders during a basf luncheon on february 22 at parrot jungle island. minh n. vu, esq., an attorney with the washington, d.c. office of epstein becker and green, p.c., spoke to basf members about the fair housing act and the americans with disabilities act. ms. vu reviewed definitions of discrimination under the laws. she clarified their application in the design and construction of multi-family dwellings and the common areas that serve such buildings. mandatory parts of the regulations involve safety and usability issues, such as: 1. accessible entrances to accessible routes 2. accessible common and public areas 3. doors wide enough for wheelchairs 4. accessible routes into and through dwellings 5. electrical switches, outlets and thermostats 6. grab bar reinforcements in bathrooms 7. wheelchair use in kitchens and bathrooms. ms. vu emphasized that compliance with local building codes doesn't necessarily assure compliance with these federal laws. some architects are uninformed, said minh, who added that the fha design manual is available at hud.gov. the former special assistant u.s. attorney at the department of justice cited examples of post-construction problems in projects and the financial surprise of retro-fit costs, fines and attorney's fees that add up. a pre-construction review by a qualified law firm can minimize risk and liability, according to her colleague michael w. casey, iii, esq., of the firm's miami office, one of 12 in the u.s., who joined ms. vu for the presentation.

There's one key phrase that keeps getting repeated every time gov. arnold schwarzenegger talks about his purported 20-year, 2 billion statewide construction program, his solar incentive and his proposed budget for next year: "no new taxes." but it ain't necessarily so. for it all depends on what is a tax. if a tax is something you have to pay in order to keep living as you do, then these plans are replete with tax increases and continuations of last year's tax increases. the same if a tax represents money one must pay unexpectedly to government. schwarzenegger, for example, plans no increase in university, college or community college fees next fall, but also plans no reductions. this will "make life easier" for students and their families, he said. but schwarzenegger and the legislature increased those fees by an average of about 10 percent last year, causing hardships among university of california and cal state students and spurring tens of thousands of dropouts from community colleges. keeping fees at last year's levels won't be much relief to most california families, whose typical income increase from last year is in the 2-3 percent range. then there are schoolteachers, almost all of whom spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly on school supplies for children in their classes, everything from glue to pencils, chalk and construction paper. they do this on an average salary of , 845 for elementary and high school teachers. in the late 1990s, legislators and then-gov. gray davis voted them a tax credit of 0 to , 500 per year, both as reimbursement for the supplies and as an incentive to stay in the schools. for the second straight year, schwarzenegger proposes to suspend this credit, meaning teachers will pay hundreds of dollars more than most had reason to expect. then there's the governor's solar incentive plan, designed to put solar panels on more than 1 million roofs statewide. this will be underwritten largely by customers of the state's four big utility companies, southern california edison, pacific gas & electric, san diego gas & electric co. and southern california gas co. apartment dwellers and homeowners without any interest at all in solar power will soon see an additional line on monthly gas and electric bills, with average residential pg&e customers paying an additional a year and those in southern california between and per year more. the idea is to give the state's solar industry a boost, and it should. homeowners and businesses buying the typical , 000 array of solar panels can expect to benefit by about , 000 from schwarzenegger's plan. this idea never came close to making it through the legislature, in part because democrats wanted to attach a requirement that all the work be done by union labor, while republicans wouldn't tolerate any such thing. so schwarzenegger went to his compliant appointees on the state public utilities commission, who quickly approved the plan by a 3-1 vote. not a tax? try not paying and see what happens. schwarzenegger is sometimes accused of balancing his budget on the backs of the poor, the poorest of whom will see cost of living increases for supplemental security income which goes to seniors, the blind and disabled ; delayed for two years. the solar incentive plan provides more reason for the poor to complain. not many welfare recipients will be interested in laying out , 000 for solar panels and then getting , 000 back, for a net expense of , 000, to be amortized over many years of lowered electric bills. most solar buyers, as usual, will be middle class or wealthy homeowners, plus some businesses. this may, as schwarzenegger asserts, save everyone money in the long run by reducing the amount of power utilities and the state must buy. it will also let those who install solar equipment sell any extra power produced by their arrays back to the utilities. put it all together and this year's schwarzenegger proposals don't look much different from last year's, also presented with a "no new taxes" claim. back then, teachers also lost their tax credit, students paid more or were forced to leave school and colas for the poor were minimized. which shows that schwarzenegger's no new taxes claims usually mean only that the classes of people and businesses he favors won't pay more, but many others will, even if what they pay is called something other than a tax. for full details of gov. schwarzenegger's solar incentive program, go to cpuc .gov static energy 051214 solarincentive and play poker texas hold em. Elizabeth f. loftus has been working with memories and the process of remembering since she received her ph.d. in 1970 from stanford. she is referred to as one of the researchers spearheading the research on human memory and she received the prestigious grawemeyer award in 2005 in recognition of her work with human memory. the grawemeyer award homepage ; through her work she is questioning the traditional idea of memories as being perfect images of what happened at the time the memories were encoded. it is this difference that we are interested in and are going to investigate in order to get a more nuanced view of repression and recovered memories. loftus has been working with human memory in relation to eyewitness testimonies and in courtrooms. in that capacity she has been called in as an expert witness or consultant in several court cases. loftus is of the belief that memories are malleable and that it is wrong to convict the accused simply based on eyewitness testimonies. loftus, nature, 2003 ; she is implying that memories can be altered and has written several books and articles about how and why this can occur. she also states that entirely new memories can be implanted in people's minds making them truly believe that they have experienced something that never really happened. with this knowledge loftus is questioning how much we should rely on memories as proof in criminal cases. her research is by many looked upon as groundbreaking and helping wrongfully accused people. psychology today, 1996 ; even though none of loftus' statements disprove or attempt to disprove that people can recollect what happened in a given situation, some feel that their integrity as witnesses is being questioned. this is for example when loftus poses as an expert witness and is explaining how it is possible that witnesses might believe that they remember exactly what happened at the crime scene. but loftus argues that memories are malleable and that the and money to play poker. Welcome at last to the 100 edition of polar pig, the main zine and founder member of variable pig. it has taken 17 years, 2 main editors and a host of game gms and subzine editors to get this far. it' quite frightening to think that s i' been doing this for about 1 3 of life now. ve polar pig started life as a small diplomacy zine in the summer of 1987 with 2 4 page pre-issues 0 and ; and began numbering when the first diplomacy game started. the original editor was dave box ; holmes and the format was hand-written photocopies, with added cartoons and jokes mostly lifted from " viz" magazine. the initial circulation was 8 and it' nice to see that 2 of the original readers chris green and david cowie ; are still with the s zine having seen all one hundred issues. box, like myself and still many of the current readership, graduated from the university of warwick in the mid-80s and the early readership were warwick graduates or box' old friends s from derbyshire. i joined polar pig in spring 1988 around issue 3, having asked box if i could run an en garde game in the zine. i had started to play en garde in rob wilson' " s mouse police" during my post graduate studies and later in some other zines and was keen to try gming a game. box was initially reluctant, but the en garde game started in polar pig 4. i bought in some of my new works colleagues and the circulation reached about 20. my part of the zine, together with original en garde house rules, were typed on an old mechanical typewriter and then merged with boxes handwritten parts. i took over the copying and distributing of the zine in issue 6 to save costs and the zine was augmented with various logos and cartoons by jevon pugh, a colleague of mine at anchor chemical. the first new games were added in issue 8, with the start of " der fuhrer" and " grass" and the first external gm' s arrived in issue 9 with keith dowsett running " nuclear war" and jon carter running our first game of " railway rivals" the turn-round time hasn' changed much over the years, as box and i also averaged about 5 to 6 per . t year. issue 13 was a spoof issue, published with issue 12, but later compensated for by two issue 58s. box jumped ship at issue 36 although he continued to run his football league game and diplomacy game to completion outside of the zine. however, in issue 39, i joined forces with steve guest and his zine " variable title" to form " variable pig" it was then we started the tradition of numbering each issue with a different breed of pig, . something that i chose to continue even after steve stopped producing vt. i also stopped using jevon' excellent s logos around this time as i switched computers and the file copies chris scanned for me got corrupted. jevon was an excellent cartoonist and i really should get round to scanning these again for future use. i had intended to write an issue by issue history of the zine for this issue " brief pigstory of time" but sadly this a ; , was a stretch too far. i may get around to doing this before issue 104, which will be my personal centenary as a gm and editor. however, i did manage to go through all the old zines and update the role of honour. it' quite incredible s to see the range and number of different games we' run in these pages, many of which i' completely forgotten ve d like " illuminati" and " guano archery" a total of 120 games have been completed in variable pig and more than 53 . different types of games or variants ; have been played. en garde ran for a total of 72 issues before i finally called it quits. railway rivals has been the other mainstay of the zine with a total of 44 games started. bob gingell and steve guest with 13 and 11 victories respectively have been the star players. unfortunately, i haven' counted the t total number of people that have played games here, but i suspect the number is over 200. a total of 10 people have gmed games in the zine. this issue sees a number of new games starting in variable pig, including 2 more games of the popular " nimmt!" 6 and some neat games designed by allan stagg. there' also new games of " s sternenhimmel" and " fair means or foul" so the zine continues to thrive. i' also decided to open some lists for some old games that we used to play ve including " der fuhrer" which was one of the first games played in the zine. one problem with " der fuhrer" is that it takes quite a long time to play, so i' chosen to run 3 elections per turn to ensure the game only lasts 15 turns. ve there' also a new waiting list for " s a raid" but i shall make this a shorter variant with a different map to try and s it' , make the game more interesting. finally, there' another list for the excellent trading and diplomacy game s " shanghai trader" please sign up for these and let me know if there are any other games that you' be interested . d in trying.

Ridiculous, but just think when you were a freshman. the excitement that goes along with starting something new, meeting new friends, and jumping into the unknown is all part of the experience. it is the biggest step in their little freshman lives so far, so of course this is a big deal to them. it also means the freshman get to leave behind their old school, which most likely was a kindergarten through eighth grade school. they are ready to leave behind walking in the halls next to some sixyear-old boy who urinates in stalls you have to kneel to be even remotely close to not miss. i know i had to do it saint peter's elementary school, and i thankful for grown up urinal stalls. the sophomores this year should be happy to be back in school because it means they are no longer freshman. as of august 16, 2006 at 12: 30, they took a major step in their high school lives by not being freshman. it is not like a terrible thing or anything. it's just all the petty freshman things freshman are subject to. take for example when i did track and field, i always had to carry the shot put and a couple of discs. i learned the hard way that i had to do this, and that it was not an option. also as a sophomore you might be able to drive this year. it is one year closer than you were able to last year. and no, driver's permits do not count as driving. with a newly found sense of mobility, sophomores can now enjoy driving themselves to school where they can be happy they are not freshman anymore. juniors are happy to be back in school this year because if they were smart, they do not get to look forward to speech class anymore. i understand that not everybody loved speech class, but for the majority they are just happy not to have to give speeches anymore, even if the class itself was the highlight of their day. however, don't you juniors worry too much, speech class will come around again in your first year of college. the upper class is also a welcome change for juniors. it means that high school is half way done. other than that, the upper class does not entitle anybody to anything special. i guess a 50-dollar parking spot is neat. finally, seniors should be beyond ecstatic. they should be thrilled to be back in school. first off, seniors are seniors. now you can look at anybody you do not know and know you are older than they are. seniors are the lions of high school if you will, and freshmen are the cubs. it is like a circle of life with the lions being on the top of the food chain. unfortunately, seniority does entitle seniors to option out of two classes if they wish. i say unfortunately because if you want to take seven classes like i did, you will find yourself cutting the one class you were actually looking forward to taking. i hope that this rule can be looked at again so the cubs at pius x do not have to put themselves in this pickle. so know you know why you are thrilled to be back in school. besides, school is like a ninemonth vacation anyways.
